怀左纩,寘彼周行。
huái zuǒ kuàng, zhì bǐ zhōu xíng
Keep cloth in the left arm and distribute it along the roads — an image of generosity and aid. Rulers were expected to care for travelers and the poor.
Parent note: Ask kids how we can help others in small ways — sharing food, giving time, or donating clothes.
括囊无咎,慎言其盈。
kuò náng wú jiù, shèn yán qí yíng
Tie up the bag and no blame comes; be careful that words do not overflow. This stresses restraint in speech and action — caution prevents mistakes.
Parent note: Talk about “filtering words” — think before speaking. Practice pausing before answering.
幸甚至哉,歌以咏志。
xìng shèn zhì zāi, gē yǐ yǒng zhì
How fortunate indeed — singing to express one’s will. Joy and purpose are shown in song and poetry, celebrating life’s blessings.
Parent note: Encourage kids to sing or write a small poem about something they are grateful for.
羲农播百谷,轩辕奋四兵。
xī nóng bō bǎi gǔ, xuān yuán fèn sì bīng
Fu Xi and Shennong taught farming and spread grains; the Yellow Emperor raised four armies. Ancient figures were remembered for building both livelihood and defense.
Parent note: Point out how different leaders contribute — some with food and farming, others with protection.
伐檀作伐,穴居野处。
fá tán zuò fá, xué jū yě chǔ
Cutting wood for tools; living in caves or open fields. Early humans survived with simple shelter and hard work.
Parent note: Compare with today — what are the basics we still need (food, shelter, water)?
旃裘旄服,后人是式。
zhān qiú máo fú, hòu rén shì shì
They wore furs and feathered clothes; later generations followed their example. Clothing evolved from survival needs into culture and tradition.
Parent note: Explore how clothes show culture. Ask: what does your favorite outfit say about you?
率性任道,修德象贤。
shuài xìng rèn dào, xiū dé xiàng xián
Follow one’s nature and uphold the Way; cultivate virtue and model the worthy. The goal is to align our nature with goodness and copy good examples.
Parent note: Role models matter. Share a story of someone admirable and ask children who inspires them.
潜虽伏矣,显不露形。
qián suī fú yǐ, xiǎn bù lù xíng
Even when hidden, it remains; when visible, it does not boast. True virtue exists whether seen or unseen, without showing off.
Parent note: Talk about kindness done in secret — helping without needing recognition.
